American Tree Farm System (ATFS) Process for Third Party Certification of Individual Lands

The world is finally catching up with AFF, sponsor of the American Tree Farm System® (ATFS), the oldest and largest forest certification, conservation, and advocacy program in the United States.

Since 1941 ATFS has been certifying sustainable forests on private land. In 2008, ATFS has 94,300+ forested properties, totaling nearly 26.8 million acres, owned by 87,000+ family forest landowners.

Certification is used as a means of recognizing outstanding forest stewardship. Although the certification landscape has changed, ATFS has changed too – adopting new AFF Standards of Sustainability for Forest Certification (Standards) in 2004.

However, today’s world of forest certification is dynamic and ATFS is making sure that it maintains its position as an internationally credible and respected certification system for small private landowners.

ATFS is proud of its heritage as America’s oldest and largest forest certification system for small forestland owners.
