Tune in to New Radio Series on Forests April 9th: PLT Partners with EarthSky
Known as a clear voice for science, Earth & Sky specializes in reporting timely and compelling science news and information through 90-second radio shows. Beginning April 9, a new series of radio shows focusing on forests, climate change, and energy conservation will air on over 1,800 radio stations in the U.S. The series starts with Janaki Alavalapati, Dean of Virginia Tech’s School of Forestry, discussing various aspects of using forests as a source of renewable energy.

Over the course of 2008, EarthSky producers interviewed four forest experts, ranging from National Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year, Jo Pierce of Maine, to the Associate Chief of the U.S. Forest Service, Sally Collins. From these interviews, Earth & Sky produced 10 radio shows, plus four extended podcasts, focusing on the loss of private forest land; the challenges landowners face in keeping their family forests as forests; conservation of forests and wildlife habitat by family forest owners; and the impact of climate change on forests. EarthSky Communications, Inc. reported these AFF sponsored shows have been heard, seen, read or accessed more than 135 million times, and downloaded 27,155 times to date.
You can listen to all the shows online at www.earthsky.org and through iTunes. You can find a radio station broadcasting Earth & Sky radio shows in your area at

All shows are correlated to Project Learning Tree materials, and the programs and their transcripts are available for teachers to download. Teachers can use Earth & Sky radio shows in conjunction with PLT to supplement their lessons and “virtually” bring a guest scientist into their classroom. We’ve created a new multimedia presentation to show teachers how to access and use Earth & Sky radio shows in their classroom with PLT activities.
