Why We Do It

Catalyzing Impact for Family Forests Webinar Series

Forests are the answer to our biggest conservation challenges. They strengthen our resilience in the face of a changing climate, generate economic opportunities for rural America, and conserve critical biodiversity. And the key to protecting the health of America’s forests: leveraging the voluntary carbon market to give small landowners the tools to do right by their land.

Today, funders have an opportunity to maximize their impact by investing in forest carbon projects. This series will walk attendees through how forest carbon projects offer many benefits and how funders can catalyze and scale this impact.

The Journey of a Philanthropic Dollar: An Inside Look at Forest Carbon Projects

July 23rd at 1pm ET

While traditional conservation funding is still critical to reaching our national and global climate goals, it is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of rural communities, nature, and the ongoing climate emergency. Instead, the voluntary carbon market offers funders and conservation leaders a new way to maximize their impact. For every dollar of upfront philanthropic funding in carbon projects, approximately $7 of corporate investment is unlocked – a game changer for rural America and the planet.

In this session, get an inside look at the journey of a dollar through a carbon project, from the original investment all the way to the final delivery of carbon credits. See the behind-the-scenes steps of how a project is created, funded, scaled, and verified. Learn more about how upfront philanthropic investment plays an essential role in driving the efforts of scientists, foresters, community managers and more, as they work to create healthier forests

Expanding Carbon Market Access: How FFCP Brings Opportunities to More Landowners

September 10th at 1pm ET

To protect the health of America’s forests we need to unlock opportunities for landowners from all walks of life. Small-acreage landowners are responsible for 39% of US forests, making them the nation’s largest forest ownership group. However, their potential remains largely underutilized due to trouble accessing forest conservation programs and funding

In this webinar, you’ll hear from landowners and on-the-ground organizations about the current challenges facing America’s family forest owners—from maintaining land in the face of high expenses and property taxes to navigating complex inheritance challenges. Plus, you’ll learn about the new programs and work, including heirs' property support and more accessible carbon program opportunities, designed to deliver more technical and financial support directly to America’s landowners.

Beyond Carbon: Maximizing a Forest’s Full Benefits

November 10th at 1pm ET

Forests are our most significant terrestrial carbon sink, sequestering 2.6 billion tonnes of
carbon globally annually. But their impact extends far beyond carbon. While forest carbon projects primarily focus on carbon sequestration, they also deliver essential benefits for protecting America’s clean air and water, wildlife habitats, biodiversity, wood supply, and disaster resilience.

In this session, foresters, scientists, enrolled landowners, and companies will share how carbon projects can be designed to deliver both climate and conservation outcomes, highlighting why biodiversity and ecosystem benefits are just as essential as carbon sequestration. Learn about how the Family Forest Carbon Program is modeling this approach by working with small-acreage landowners through new practice design, collaborative outreach, and innovative science in order to maximize all of a forest’s benefits.
