American Forest Foundation Statement on the Biden Administration's 2021-2022 Budget
Washington, D.C. (April 12, 2021) – The American Forest Foundation, a national conservation organization, that works to deliver conservation impact through the empowerment of family forest owners, releases the following statement in response to the Biden Administration 2021-2022 budget.
American Forest Foundation (AFF) President and CEO, Tom Martin said:
"Forests cover 740 million acres in the U.S. with the largest portion – 36 percent – being owned by families and individuals. These forests provide important benefits that all Americans count on every day – clean water, wildlife habitat and a wood supply for homes and products. These forests also present incredible potential to address our climate challenges by sequestering and storing carbon.
Family forest owners across rural America stand ready to tackle our climate challenges and other conservation issues but need help. Private sector solutions like the Family Forest Carbon Program, that provide landowners with technical assistance and income to cover the costs can help. We also need to mitigate the threats to our forests like catastrophic wildfire that undermine forest carbon solutions and endangered lives, communities, and our natural resources. Federal support for these endeavors helps empower family forest owners and ensures these owners are able to provide the conservation impact we all seek.
AFF is energized to see these issues prioritized in the high level Biden Administration proposed budget, and we look forward to seeing the detailed proposals."

From Fund to Trust: the Evolution of AFF’s Approach to Managing Non-Permanence Risk
This issue of managing non-permanence risk affects buyers, standards, project developers, and all other market participants, making it a significant impediment to scaling both nature- and tech-based solutions and thus slowing climate progress. We recently launched a study to test the feasibility of our Permanence Trust concept. But our work to address concerns of durability and permanence long predates the Trust.
