Behind the Mission: Our Annual Team Retreat

American Forest Foundation

July 14, 2026

Recently, the American Forest Foundation team came together for our annual retreat. This year, we spent a week in the beautiful rolling hills of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh ValleyThroughout the week, we participated in a variety of activities centered around sharing our specialized knowledge, what we’ve learned in the past year, and exploring how we can continue growing our impact.

With staff from across the entire organization—from foresters to communicationsscience teams to donor relations, and everyone in between—the retreat created space for conversations that don't always happen in a typical workday. By bringing those perspectives together, we were able to think more broadly about the challenges and the opportunities ahead of us. We learned about everything from invasive species from our foresters, to how our Monitoring team sets up carbon monitoring plots, our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work, our wildfire prevention projects in the West, and even got a biochar demonstration around the campfire one evening. It was a perfect time for us all to deepen our understanding of each other's work and share our passions.

We also made time to enjoy being togetherBecause we staff our teams in the communities we serve, many of us work in different locations and collaborate virtually across different states, so we were all excited to reconnect in person, get to know new teammates, and deepen relationships with old friends. We had so much fun with endless activities like birdwatching, murder mystery event, crafting, and even watching some sports together after the day was done (Knicks in 5!). Those moments always remind us how great it is to be a part of an organization where you truly enjoy who you work with, and how those connections make our work even more meaningful.

Towards the end of our retreat, we visited a property enrolled in the Family Forest Carbon Program, the Templin Woods Preserve, owned by the French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust. We were able to explore the vast forest, discover some of the different plant and animal species on the property, and see firsthand how impactful forestry management practices can be. Getting a chance to enjoy a woodland that is connected to our mission is always a grounding experience. We get to see the impact and tangible results of the landowners who we support. There is nothing like spending time in the landscapes that are behind the work we are so passionate about, and doing it with the landowners and colleagues that make it all possible.

We returned home with a clearer direction for the year ahead, and we're so excited to put the ideas and conversations from the week into action. Thank you to the landowners, partners, and communities who continue to place their trust in us. We look forward to building on that work together. Here’s to another great year!
