WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 10th, 2024) - Nathan Truitt, Executive Vice President of Climate Funding at the American Forest Foundation (AFF), released the following statement in response to the announcement of updates to the Science Based Targets Initiative’s (SBTi) Corporate Net-Zero Standard to include guidance for incorporating voluntary carbon credits for the purpose of abatement of Scope 3 related emissions:

“We celebrate SBTi’s recognition of the critical role voluntary carbon credits plays in driving global corporate climate action. The expansion of their corporate guidance means companies can address some of their emissions through purchasing high quality carbon credits produced by healthy family forests, unlocking investment in nature and local communities to maximize their climate mitigation potential.

Local communities, including family forest owners, are hit first and worst by the impacts of climate change, so we must deploy every tool at our disposal to support them. This expanded guidance will encourage corporate funding in nature-based projects, empowering these communities to be part of the solution and ensuring we’re doing all we can today for the sake of future generations and planet.”
